The secret reason why Glenbrae lambswool and merino wool garments are luxurious yet hard-wearing and never lose their shape
There is a reason knitwear made by Spectrum Yarns is exceptionally hard-wearing yet always keeps its shape … but it’s a secret.
Years ago, Spectrum Yarns’s founder and managing director Richard Brown was asked to provide extra durable hard-wearing material for a contract for airport seats.
The stipulation was that it had to be tough enough to last 10 years and so Richard went into research and development mode and invented a yarn called Spirol which surpassed expectations.
Richard felt the yarn would also benefit his clothing ranges and it sure did. Even though the clothes are soft and luxurious they are also incredibly hard wearing.
Spirol is a unique elastomeric yarn and when it’s used to make clothes it gives each garment strength, extension and elasticity. It makes the garment – be that a pullover, zip-up top or slipover – stretchy so it moves naturally with the body. It also prevents pilling when bobbly bits appear on the garment’s surface.
The strength means that the cuffs and welts do not lose their shape. On woollen clothes that don’t incorporate Spirol, these parts can often go baggy and lose their shape.
Spirol also takes washing woollen clothes to a whole new level as it means they can be washed in a washing machine and then even put in a tumble dryer on a low heat setting.
Spirol is an absolute necessity when manufacturing seamless garments.
The best bit of all is that no-one else in the world does Spirol yarn … it’s a unique selling point.
Spectrum Yarns invented it, Spectrum Yarns is the only one that uses it in its textile manufacturing and it’s a closely guarded secret so no-one else knows how it’s made or has the specialist machinery to use it.
